Going Up?

Wow talk about chemo brain, I totally forgot all about the blogging challenges, I’ve been so busy writing about other stuff. I apparently have way more to talk about than I ever imagined. 🙂 With out further ado, lets talk about my “Elevator Pitch”.

What do I mean by elevator pitch? It’s not a sales pitch like it may sound like but rather, what makes me excited, what am I building towards. It also makes the “What do you do?” question easier to deal with if you have something prepared in your mind. Especially for me who is not doing a nine to five kind of job at the moment. This can also be a great way to have fun with ideas and experiments when talking to new people. It don’t have to be boring.

This is what I used to say when someone asked me what I do. “I work at a grocery store stacking shelves on the night fill team.” Now this was true at the time, but that’s not the only thing I was doing, nor was it what excited me. I was spending quite a bit of time reading and learning how to make my life better, not to mention that I was learning how to do foreign exchange and other things. It was almost like I was focusing on the not so good part of my life and not even mentioning all the cool stuff I was doing. I did change my attitude at some point to be more positive and with time my life became better, but that is another post altogether.

Since then obviously, if you have been reading along, I learnt that I have cancer, and I no longer work full time. What will I use as my “Elevator Pitch” now? When someone asks what I do, what will I say? Well I want to make it positive, surprising and fun. I went through a few different things like: “Nothing, I have Hodgkin Lymphoma.” Well that’s no fun so maybe: “I’m dealing with cancer and having a rest” Still true but after some thought I found one that I really like. It goes something like this: “Right now, I am defeating cancer and learning how to win at life.” Yep definitely going to use that one a few times. Now I just have to meet a new person. 🙂 As far as a pitch goes, that will open up a whole lot of opportunities to further the conversation. Much better than what I was doing to start with, which was quite closed. And also my new elevator pitch makes me feel a whole lot better about what I am doing and what I want to achieve.

Perhaps you want to give a think about your “Elevator Pitch” and how you present yourself to people, and yourself. 🙂

Thanks for reading, I know that’s a bit longer than usual, but sometimes I just can’t stop. 🙂

Stay Awesome.

Positively elevated, T Neil van Rooyen.

  1. Good word Neil. Auntie May always says “I’m not dying of Cancer, I’m Living with Cancer!” So much more positive!
Don’t worry about posts being too long, most people love to read what you write! I know I do!

  2. I’m still absolutely loving the positivity coming from you! Love the new elevator pitch too, makes me think how I can make my elevator pitch more exciting and positive. Love the long posts too 🙂
